Lisa asks…
barry makes $5 for each case of chocolate bars he sells and $7 for each case of hard candy. if he supposed, pls?
1) barry makes $5 for each case of chocolate bars he sells and $7 for each case of hardcandy. if he supposed to sell 75 cases all together, what is the minimum number os cases of hardcandy he should sell to make at least $350? please, tx in advance
Susie answers:
He doesn’t have to any cases of hard candy because if he sells 75 cases of chocolate bars he will make $375. =)
Nancy asks…
Whats the little fruit hard candy that comes in a tin case. They are shaped like little fruits.?
I don’t remember them being like that, more like an altoids can
No they had like a power sugar coating
Susie answers:
They are French by the company “La Vie.”
http://www.candywarehouse.com/lavie.html
I remember those candies fondly! So yummy…
Here’s a photo of the lemon candy drops:

Carol asks…
My hard candy turned out too soft. I didn’t heat it enough while cooking it. Is there a way I can fix it?
It’s almost like it didn’t cool down yet, but I know that isn’t the case.
Susie answers:
You probably added to much liquid and didn’t boil it hot enough. There isn’t really a fix but to start over.
Chris asks…
Which is a more better case for my new Ipod touch Hard Candy’s Street Skin or Speck’s Candy Street Skin?
In your opinion which case has better:
Shock Protection
Scratch Proof
Drop Proof
Looks
Susie answers:
I would suggest Speck’s Candy Street Skin

How do candy companies keep the caramel in their chocolate from hardening?
I love chocolate, especially the ones with caramel in the middle. Sometimes I see those hard caramels. I’ve been thinking…
How do they keep the caramel in the chocolate nice and gooey, and not hard and chewy?
Susie answers:
As you cook the sugar and add the other ingredients the temperature of the sugar and length of time it is cooked is the reason, the addition of glucose, corn syrup and other based sugars will make a soft, medium or hard caramel.
Also candy in chocolate coatings stay hydrated as there is no air to harden it, Werther’s and Reisen are one example.
We use to make a caramel layered cake from Hungary called a Dobos Torte and the caramel in the layers stayed soft enough to seal, but still able to cut it.
Carol asks…
Who delivers the Best Gourmet Caramel Apples?
Which company makes the best tasting, biggest gourmet caramel/candy apples that can be delivered? We loved the ones from The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory we tried on a vacation, but they don’t deliver them; you can only buy them at a store location, and there are none near us. I just wanted to get some opinions before trying others since they can be kind of expensive. I didn’t want to be dissapointed. Thanks!
Susie answers:
QVC has Mrs. Prindables. They are awesome and huge! They have a lot of different flavors. Michigan also has several stores that deliver homade ones. But I don’t know the websites for them. I think one is called Baynes in Freeland Michigan on Midland Road. I know Marie Osmond orders from them all the time.
Donald asks…
Does US have/sell Alpenliebe chocolate filled caramel candies?
I’m in china now and I saw Alpenliebe chocolate filled caramel chews made by Perfetti van Melle (same company that makes Mentos). Are they available in the US. They come in various flavors here so if I cant get them in the states I’d like to pack some back.
Susie answers:
Pack some back – mail them back something, but no, I have not seen any in a long while. Once in a while I can run across them at Cost Plus or World Market, but not often. Sometimes when in larger cities with a diverse ethnic background, I can find them there. Hawaii has them I know for sure.
Laura asks…
Does anyone know where I can find Irish Cream Liqueur Chocolate Caramel?from Traditional Irish Candy Co Dublin
Does anyone know where I can find Irish Cream Liqueur Chocolate Caramels? I bought a bunch of these from the tourist shops (Blarney Woolen Mills for 2.99 Euro each bag) when I was there in April. This was the best candy I have ever had in my life. I would love to order some for Christmas presents. Blarney Mills says they cannot mail me any due to a US law on food imports. I am trying to find any other way to get them or another candy just like it. These were from the Traditional Irish Candy Co. Fonthill Industrial Park, Fonthill Road Dublin 22, Ireland. I haven’t been able to find the company online, either. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks for your help!
Susie answers:
Actually i’ve seen it at a store called BevMo www.bevmo.com
But this is in California…………….
Charles asks…
1980s candy apple lollipop?
When I was a child I use to go down to the coner store in New Jersey and get lollipops. It was red possibly having bubble gum in the middle. It was shaped like a candy apple and tasted like one too. I thought Topps put them out but I could be wrong. I know they still have the caramel version but I’m looking for the regular candy apple. Does anyone know where to find them or remember the name of the lollipop or the company who made them?
Susie answers:
Charms puts them out. I haven’t seen the candy apple one in years, it may have been replaced by the caramel apple flavor.
What are you doing with your babies tonight for Halloween? What are they dressing as?
Are you dressing up also?
Kaya is going to be a “Retro” type Kitty. We are going to see the grandparents pass out candy at the community center and then strolling thru the neighborhood with her little friends (she is 6 months).
I am going as a Kitty too.
Susie answers:
Casidee is dressing up as a Witch and we are going trick or treating with my sister and brother in law and my 2 nephews.
Have fun!
Paul asks…
Who sings the song the leader of the pack?
It was a retro song I used to listen to when I was little. All I can remember is a part of the chorus
“I met him at the candy store
that’s when I fell for him
the leader of the pack vroom vroom”
do you know who sings it?
Susie answers:
The Shangri-Las did the original in 1964. Twisted Sister did a cover version in 1983.
Great song!!
Laura asks…
When you buy a bag of mixed-flavored candy, are most of the pieces the flavor you like least?
I have a bag of Retro Starburst and they gave me an overabundance of Hey Mango-Rena, the only flavor I don’t care for.
Susie answers:
Yeah, I got the same kind of luck. I like the flavored tootsie rolls but when I buy a bag I always end getting a lot of vanilla, the flavor I like least.
I haven’t tried the retro starbursts yet but I kinda hate mango so I think I would be with you on that one.
Richard asks…
Looking for a shimmering but not glitter purple eyeshadow in UK?
I need a deep purple (but not dark purple) eyeshadow that I really want to show up. I have Hard Candy purple, Urban Decay purple but they look almost black when they are on so not too dark.
Also, any photos or hints on how best to apply it so it’s kinda funky – it’s to go with a retro look…
Susie answers:
I have too many purple eyeshadow’s :
try some of these
[x] Mac pigment- violet
[x] Mac single eyeshadow in colours:
-satellite dreams
-purple haze
-parfait amour
[x] Gosh- butterfly
[x] Barry M- lilac
[x] Never too busy too be beautiful- blur
Try applying a light shimmery purple along the lid and bottom lash line and a deeper purple towards the outer corners of the socket. Finish it off by applying some purple glitter along the bottom lashline
Chris asks…
Is a black and white wedding with multicolor accents tacky? It will be very casual “beach boardwalk” themed.?
I’m thinking retrocandy, carnival games, colorful lights. But I don’t want it to look like a kid’s party, so I’m thinking about doing primarily black & white, and adding the colorful accents for pop and fun.
I’m thinking retrocandy, carnival games, colorful lights. But I don’t want it to look like a kid’s party, so I’m thinking about doing primarily black & white, and adding the colorful accents for pop and fun.
This is a second wedding for both my fiancee & me (with my kids involved in the ceremony), and we don’t want to do repeats of the traditional weddings that we did the first time around. We want something fun and off-beat, not stuffy and predictable.
Susie answers:
That sounds fine to me. Also, remember it is your day do what you want…if it looks great to you and you will be happy with it then what other people think doesn’t matter. I think that it would look very nice.
What exactly does this mean? What affect does it have?
I love eating candy, but 3 weeks ago, I began to experience the shakes, and although it turned out that I was fatigued, I had a change of heart. Mom suggested sugarfreecandy.
Anyway, I was wondering does eating in moderation help to process food better? If you end up eating a lb of something, would it really make a difference to eat it within 2 hours or 2 days?
Susie answers:
Of course, eating in moderation really helps you become more healthy
and disciplined in taking in food for health and nutrition of your body.
With self-will, we can train ourselves to eat till we are just half full and still meet our nutritional needs.
EAT in moderation. Or, eat till you are only 50% to 70% full. These are common guidelines for healthy eating.
How do we cultivate the habit of eating in moderation? Can our stomach gauge the amount we need?
In Asia, rice is often taken as a staple. If chicken, albeit cooked in different ways, is your only source of protein for the whole week, you would be consuming chicken excessively, in terms of frequency. Plan your weekly menu so that you have two days of meat, two days of fish, two days of egg, tofu or other vegetarian dishes, and perhaps leave one day to satisfy your cravings.
Take a look at your weekly lunch. If fried noodles, deep-fried fish, potato chips, spring rolls, fried bean-curd sheet, goreng pisang or other fried dishes are your favourite dishes, you are eating fried food excessively.
Deep-fried food is undeniably tasty. It has high calories due to the absorbed oil. It may also have toxic residues if the oil has been reused many times.
Eat moderately and have variety by including foods that are steamed, grilled, baked, boiled, poached, fried or raw.
James asks…
What do Jehovah’s Ws children do at school during Valentines Day?
I am a teacher in public school, and one of the teachers for my special ed kids threw the biggest Valentine day party I have ever sen in school. There were so many parents there volunteering and candy galore. Even sugarfreecandy in case there was a diebetic.
The parents of many of the kids sent the most beautiful Valentine cards to their kids, and the teacher read aloud the dedications on the cards. They said things like, “Dear, you were a tiny little creature when you were born, but you have grown in our hearts so big that you will never leave our hearts. We love you and are proud of you! Happy Valentines Day!”
They were so touching, and came with family pictures of the kids as inrfants. Some made them into little Cupids out of photo shop. Parents were crying. Even the kids let out an occasional “Awwww.” (1st grade class btw. They do that a lot.)
Everybody gave Valentines, and everybody got valentines. Except for….. drum rol…..
The one JW kid. Her mom was there in the corner with her arms folded and a frown on her face. Her daughter was reading and doing homework, worsheets etc. I of copurse knew the first second that she was a JW. So Iwent over to talk to her just to see what she would say. She didn’t speak English, she just said something like, “No lo permito.”( “I don’t allow it”) I tried to engage her in Spanish but she just refused to get into the reasons. “”somos Testigos de Jehova’. No celebramos Valenmtine Day.” That was about as much as she probably knew to say about it. I guessed that she was new to the JWs.
I asked the teacher, Ms. Lee after what she did with JW kids and if she had alternative parties for them. She just said “No.” But then she said something that shocked and horrified me. “Most of the time they ask if it is an art project, and if I say “yes” then they say, well it’s an educational art project so they can make all the hearts and Cupids they want.”
I was floored. An art project that includes making Hearts on Valentines day and giving and receiving Valentines and candy?!!? WTF?
I have never heard of it before, Yet, Ms. Lee, teaching for over 30 years, said “MOST of the time” She said it was rare what the mother was doing to day, actually coming down to the school to make sure her child sis not do anything pagan.
Anyone else know what JW kids do on Valentines Day?
Oh, and I also asked the mom in question, if she gave cards etc. to her kid at other times during the year. She just looked completely condused at that question and just said “No.”
Susie answers:
Don’t forget without such legalistic, talmudic rules of conduct, they would not be able to harp on how they are more Christ-like, they practice ‘the true’ religion.
So they become just like the Sadducee’s and Pharisee’s of Jesus day who look for tiny infractions of the law instead of fulfilling the greatest commandments of Jesus sermon on the mount.

Daniel asks…
why don’t I feel well?
For the past week or so, I’ve had a lot of trouble sleeping. Before this I could fall asleep in seconds. But until recently I have also had some problems with binge eating and I would often eat a huge meal right before bed. Now I’m trying to kick that habit so I haven’t been eating late. I’ve also been exercising a lot more. Right now I can’t sleep and I feel rather shaky. I took my temp and it was 97.6. I also have thyroiditis, but I don’t know what kind, as my doctor has not tested for antibodies yet. My heart rate is 55 bpm. My head feels like it’s buzzing and I feel fairly nauseated as well. I did eat some sugarfree chocolates today and I was thinking I could be getting sick from them, but I’ve never reacted this way before from sugarfreecandy, the most that has happened is a little gas and diarrhea when I’ve had too much. I’m having intermittent chest pains and headaches. I just feel very uncomfortable and I can’t figure out why. Does anyone have any ideas?
Could it be my thyroid? Like I said, I’ve had trouble sleeping for a little while now, it’s not just tonight. I’m afraid something else might be wrong because I feel so shaky and weak. But I’m also worried that I might just be having some anxiety, so I don’t want to call the doc or go in to the hospital at 1 am for no reason. My heart is pounding pretty hard, but the rate is slow. Anyway, how can I get to sleep? Help me please, I feel so ill.
I am a 20 year old female who is slim/ athletic/healthy weight. My heart keeps switching from pumping hard to barely pumping at all. Right now it feels as if it is barely pumping.
I eat a well balanced diet and take a multivitamin as well as a few other nutritional supplements. I’m not deficient in nutrients. I don’t often eat sugarfreecandy.
Also, melatonin is not an herb, it is a hormone. And I already had some calming tea tonight. And I know artificial sweeteners are unhealthy, but I was offered the candy without being told it was sugarfree. Yep.
I wish just one time someone would answer and know what they’re talking about. I realize most people are just trying to help but it really DOESNT help to mislead someone about their health. Nothing I’ve said would imply that I have any of the things wrong with me that were suggested. Please don’t answer unless you have a valid idea. I will no longer be using this website. Take care everyone.
Susie answers:
Why don’t you call the E.R. And ask to speak to a nurse?
Linda asks…
Halloween goodies for diabetic kids?
Are there any goodies you can give to diabetic trick-or-treaters? It must be heart-breaking for parents to tell these kids they can’t have any halloween candy. I ask because I’m diabetic, and although my parents didn’t do halloween when I was little (they thought it was evil, lol), and I wonder if there are ANY good ideas to cut out the sugar! So-called “sugarfree” candy is never carbohydrate free, so that stuff doesn’t work. Plus if you eat more than a couple of pieces, you’ll have serious digestive issues…
Susie answers:
I don’t give out candy…I go to the dollar store and buy things instead of sweets. Most of the kids get excited when they see they are getting a cool prize.
Sandra asks…
Do you know what are your bad habits using the horoscope??
Aries Out in Front
Rams have a habit of pushing to the front of the line, both literally and figuratively. And while this quality has helped Aries get ahead, it can also compromise their relationships. Putting an animal, child or plant in their care can correct the problem. As soon as this sign’s nurturing qualities are cultivated, their selfishness will diminish.
• Taurean Trash
Bulls love clutter. Being surrounded by all their possessions gives them a sense of security. It also creates headaches, confusion, and chaos. Storage systems that keep their stuff on display will prevent this sign from strewing their stuff all over the house. Stacking baskets, glass jars, and open shelving can promote organization.
• Nerve-Wracking Twins
Geminis are the nail-biters of the zodiac. Twins are self-conscious about their hands, and need to keep them busy at all times. Activities like knitting, carving, or bead work provide welcome distractions. Weekly manicures will also keep temptation at bay. Twins are less likely to gnaw their cuticles when they’ve just paid for their upkeep!
• Cancers and the Candyman
If you’ve ever wondered how Cancers stay so sweet, take a look at their sugar intake. This sign loves cookies, candy, and ice cream. An occasional indulgence is fine, but too much dessert can take a toll on waist lines and energy levels. What Crabs are really seeking is oral gratification. Sugar-free gum or dried fruit provides a healthy distraction from candy crunching.
• Lavish Leos
The guy who’s sitting next to you in the elegant restaurant, shouting to his personal assistant on his cell phone? Probably a Leo. It’s only natural that a sign that is blessed with creativity, charm and wit feels tempted to show off. Actually, this desire to brag is rooted in insecurity. The sooner Lions learn to compliment others, the quicker they’ll receive the praise they crave.
• Virgos Fear Filth
These nit-pickers sometimes compromise their own pleasure for the sake of perfection. Deep down inside, these folks are really sensualists at heart. They need to learn that it is better to feel good than to look good. Allocating a few minutes each day for fun but messy activities like baking, painting, or sculpting can cure Virgos of their fear of filth.
• Libras Love to Shop
Librans gave birth to the term “shopaholic”. These folks have every credit card known to man. And while their taste is undeniably impeccable, it can get them in trouble at bankruptcy court. What’s really at stake here is a quest for beauty. Enjoying simple but inexpensive pleasures like nature walks and museums can quell the urge to splurge.
• Strictly Scorpios
Nobody carries a grudge better than this sign. Unfortunately, hanging on to resentments has a way of crowding out love, happiness, and trust. In order for a Scorpio to let go of anger, they must first practice self-care. Getting a massage every month or writing in a journal each day will soften this sign’s heart and enable forgiveness.
• Brutally Honest Sagittarius
Archers have a bad habit of telling the truth. And while these folks have the best intentions, that doesn’t take the sting out of comments like, “Gee, those pants make you look fat!” or “Were you drunk when you wrote this report?” The best way for Archers to cultivate tact is through prodigious study. Etiquette books will definitely help!
• Capricorns Can’t Quit
This sign is the original workaholic. Many Capricorns fear that poverty will set in the moment they stop toiling. Keeping a gratitude journal can break this terrible habit. The more Capricorn becomes aware of their non-material blessings, the healthier their behavior will become. No more cutting vacations short for the sake of work!
• Antisocial Aquarius
Water-bearers get into the habit of creating completely self-sufficient lives. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult for them to achieve intimacy. Basically, Aquarians are afraid that relationships will compromise their independence. Fortunately, these folks love to experiment. By treating intimacy as an exercise, this sign can relinquish control for the sake of loving relationships.
• Pickled Pisces
As a water sign, it’s only natural that Pisceans find comfort in liquids. When those liquids have a high alcohol content, problems can ensue. Naturally, a twelve-step program can be of enormous benefit here. Meditation and yoga can help, too, as they allow Pisces to achieve a healthy sense of nirvana. That’s all these Fish are really seeking.
Susie answers:
I’m pisces… What’s right about this is that you can put me in the beach or in a swimming pool all day long… Better yet all week… And i stay there.. I dont mind at all… But i don’t drink.. I don’t solve my problems through alcohol…
I might be lazy about solving my problems… Yes i admit… As i think a lot about the solution cause i’d be afraid of its consequences…
On the news tonight a dentist pays children to turn in their candy to him he gives them money per pound for their HalloweenCandy. Then he ships the candy to the war zone and the soldiers give the candy out to the local children there. Don’t you think this is a wonderful way to rid our kids of tooth decay and help make our soldiers look good at the same time. Many soldiers are married so I thought this would fit into M&D section. What do you think of this Dentist’s efforts ??? Happy Halloween!!
Susie answers:
Yes i can see where its a nice idea but i hope he also sends toothpaste and a tooth brush.lol
Lizzie asks…
Could I get arrested if I dressed up as a Nazi Soldier and went to a Jewish Church on Halloween?
I am going to dress as a Nazi Soldier, my friend will bet me that I will not go into a Jewish Church on Halloween and ask forcandy
if I did this could I get in trouble, I imagine they will be upset but could they get the cops on me
Susie answers:
You could really get hurt this way. Someone could overreact on you big time. And it would be your fault for starting it. I hope the cops come and make your life miserable.
Good luck.
Lisa asks…
Thanksgiving care package to soldier/Iraq?
I already sent a Halloween care package with candy and dvds.
What can I put in it for Thanksgiving? Thanks
Susie answers:
1- Pictures for one thing. Even if it is a soldier that you “adopted”. I remember when I was in Iraq and I was “adopted” by a few people, it was really really nice to get pictures of people in. I rarely got pictures from my family, but even when I did it was nice to see who I was talking to. Pictures from home also capture the environment back home and what it looks like back in the States.
2- Of course candies are great…lol
3- Some sort book that would interest the soldier. Also word finds, crossword puzzles, and those Sudoku (if I spelled that right….lol) are great things that the soldier can make use of to fill some of the boring times. If the soldier is contantly on the move like I was, those little puzzle books come in pretty handy becaues they fold up nicely and fit into a pack without taking up too much room.
3- Summer sausage!!! I loved it when I would get in summer sausage and some crackers. Hillshire Farms makes a really good pack that has a coupleof different types of sausages, cheeses, and crackers in it. You can rest assured that none of that will go to waste and the soldier will love it, as well as his buddies.
4- Post cards from landmarks back home with a hand written note on the back.
5- Of course a hand written letter is great as well.
6- DVDs are good, especially anything newer.
7- Some sort of sports memorabilia if the soldier has a favorite sport or team. If they have a favorite team that is playing, write them and let them know how they are doing.
8- Oh with the DVD thing, if the soldier has a favorite TV show that has seasons on DVD, those are great because they do occupy a lot of time. They can watch an episode before a mission or bed, and when they get up or back they still have something to look forward to to do when they get back.
I hope these suggestions help. These are the things that really helped me along my deployment and make things a little bit easier. I don’t know if the soldier is a family or friend, or even just someone you “adopted” these are pretty much things that you can’t go wrong with. THANK YOU SO MUCH for being someone back home that is doing this kind of thing for someone over there. I can tell you that doing what you are doing changes things for someone over there. Even if you are just an adopter…lol I am home now and still have contact with someone that adopted me.
Chris asks…
What is your toddler going to be and do for halloween?
This is a two part question
part one: What are you dressing your little one up as forhalloween?
After looking at all the store costumes this year i couldn’t find any i like so we are amking our own. He’s gonna be a little soldier boy. Camo pants black shirt leather boots with a camo helmet and face paint..did a test run today its tooo cute.
part two: What are you going to do?
We’re not going trick or treating except maybe up the block and back he’s only two doesn’t need that much candy lol! We are also going to a church harvest festival. We aren’t church people ourselves but its my friends church and they are all cool.
Susie answers:
Well tonight my 4 1/2 year old and my 19 month old are going to a harvest party at our church they are dressed up as a G I joe monkey on a skate board (brasen 19 months) and a flying kangaroo fairy (kassidy-jade 4 1/2) she came up with both costumes.
Tomorrow i will take them out for a little bit because they love it. Not for too long cause i am supposed to be on bed rest until my twins are born but Halloween only happens once a year. Good luck
Sandra asks…
Do you have any ideas? EASY 10 POINTS?
I decided to fundraise for a memorial garden for my dentist’s son, who died in Afghanistan. I feel like it’s a good cause, plus it’s a leadership position to put on my college application (which is not the reason why I’m doing it).
My friend and I are going “trick-or-treating” on Halloween, but instead of asking forcandy, we’ll be asking for money for a good cause.
How do you think I should approach people?
Should I make little brochures or flyers about the soldier so they believe us?
How should I ask for money (I’ve never done this before)? Do you just say “Would you like to donate money to a good cause?”
Should I show them anything?
Also, I’m thinking of fundraising at my school as well. Any ideas? I was thinking a bake sale.
@ Jayne says READ MORE BOOKS: actually, it IS a leadership position. Although i did not mention it in my original question, i’m getting together about 10 people to fundraise and organize this project, and i will be LEADING them. i didn’t mean going from door to door was a leadership position. i hope this clarifies.
Susie answers:
“plus it’s a leadership position to put on my college application”
No, it’s not a leadership position. It’s a very nice thing to do, but a leadership position involves you developing strategies, recruiting and managing people in a project, mobilizing resources, building people’s capacities, etc. Unless you are also securing the land for the memorial garden, designing it, doing press outreach regarding this effort, are in charge of all fundraising for it, etc., you aren’t in a “leadership position.” That isn’t to say what you are doing isn’t nice or isn’t worth doing. But asking for donations isn’t “leadership.”
You should most definitely make brochures about this soldier, to show that you have permission to fundraise on behalf of this family. You also need to keep track of every donation (you write down the name or address of every donor and how much they give), and you give that information and the money to the family. A web site talking about this garden effort would also be a good idea, one that shows exactly how much money is raised.

Such as these: http://whatacatchdonnie.tumblr.com/post/2193622745
“bastxrd” “fxck off” “eat shxt and die” . I want to give them to my ex for valentines day. (: . Anyone know a store (online or real life) where you can get some? Thanks.
Susie answers:
Well, Despair Inc. Sells “Bittersweets,” which have some rather unhappy things on them. I believe the “Dumped” box might suit your needs best.
They’re not as outright offensive as the ones you linked to, but these are also less likely to get you arrested for sending threatening messages.
Christmas Symbols
History of the CandyCane
The development of the candycane took a few hundred years. Before the invention of the modern pacifier, parents used to give their babies unflavored white sugar sticks to suck on. During the 1670′s a German choirmaster had the sugar sticks bent into a shepherd’s staff and passed out to children attending the Christmas services. This holiday custom spread throughout Europe and fancy canes, decorated with roses, were used as Christmas decorations in many homes. About 1900 the white candycane received its traditional red stripes and peppermint flavoring. At the same time the legend of the candycane came into being. According to this legend, a candy maker in Indiana designed the candycane to tell the true story of Christmas – a story about a virgin giving birth to a shepherd who would give up His life for the sheep.
The most obvious symbolism used in the candycane is its shape. Turned one way, it looks like a “J” for Jesus. The newborn Lamb of God was named Jesus, meaning Savior, because He was destined to “save His people from their sins.” [Mt 1:21] Turned the other way, candy canes remind us of the shepherd’s staff. The first people to hear of Christ’s birth were shepherds guarding their flocks at night. [Lk 2:8-20] Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd and the Bible frequently compares the actions of the Messiah to those of a shepherd searching for his lost sheep, feeding them, gently leading them, and carrying them in his bosom. [Ps 23; Jn 10:1-18; Is 40:11; Jer 31:10; Micah 5:4; Heb 13:20] The sweetness of the candy reminds us that we are fed on the sweet milk of the Gospel of our salvation and peace. [Eph 1:13; 6:15]
The hardness of the candy reminds us that Jesus is our rock of refuge. [Deu 32:4, 15, 18; 1 Sam 2:2; 2 Sam 22:32, 47; 23:3; Psa 18:2, 31, 28:1, 92:15; 94:22; 95:1; Is 44:8] In rocky lands like Israel, people often sought shelter from their enemies in the caves or rocky crags of cliffs. Rocks also remind us of the solidness of the promises of Christ who is a precious cornerstone and sure foundation to those who follow Him, but a “stone of stumbling and a rock of offense” to those who reject His gift of peace. [1 Pet 2:6-8]
The whiteness of the candy brings to mind the Virgin Birth and the sinless life of Christ. [Mt 1:23; Lk 1:34-35] We also are made as pure as the snow through the cleansing action of His blood. [Rev 7:9, 14; Is 1:18]
The traditional candycane has 3 small red stripes to remind us of the soldiers’ stripes by which we are healed and a larger stripe which represents the blood shed by Christ on Calvary’s tree. [Is 53:5; Mt 27:32-50] Some people say that the 3 small stripes honor the Holy Trinity while the larger stripe reminds us of the one true God. Others claim that the small stripes represent our mini-passions or sufferings and the great stripe symbolizes Christ’s Passion. A green stripe is sometimes placed on candy canes to remind us that Jesus is God’s gift to us. (Green is the color of giving.)
The peppermint flavor of modern candy canes is said to be similar to hyssop. In Old Testament times, hyssop was associated with purification and sacrifice. During the first Passover celebrations, a bundle of hyssop was used to smear the blood of Passover lambs upon the doorposts of houses so that the Angel of Death would pass over their occupants. [Ex 12:22] Bundles of hyssop were also used to sprinkle blood on worshipers and objects during Mosaic purification rituals. [Ex 24:6-8; Lev 14:4, 49-52] After his affair with Bathsheba, King David appealed to God’s mercy crying, “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.” [Ps 51:7] Peppermint reminds us that Jesus is our Passover Lamb. [1 Cor 5:7] His blood cleanses us from sin and destroys the power of death. [Hosea 13:14; 1 Cor 15:54-57; Heb 2:14-15; Rev 20:6]

I am looking for Easter Basket ideas now that my son has braces? No candy… !?
Any ideas would be helpful. I have a book, microsoft points, and maybe an itunes gift card…he’s 14 1/2.

You could also get a DVD, watch, and or a video game.
Laura asks…
Easter basket ideas for my husband?
I know it seems silly, but my husband and I decided it would be cute to make each other an Easter basket.
I was wondering some other ideas besides candy. Of course I’m going to put his favorite candies, but I’m looking for other ideas. I did think of a DVD, but there is nothing out there that he wants w/ movies.
Susie answers:
I like the idea of the plastic candy filled eggs for your husband. I think that you should mark one of them with a drawn on heart and have him open it first. Inside the first egg would be a note that would lead him to another egg in your home. Each egg will lead him to another. Don’t make it too many eggs, or he will get bored. At the last egg, let it lead him to a special treat or gift. Or, you could be the treat. You might also put notes in some of the remaining eggs, for things like a free back rub or foot massage. Use your imagination. Make the notes something you know that he will appreciate.
Good Luck ))

What are some good ideas for children easter baskets?
this is my first time making easter baskets for kids. the children are ages 3 1/2, 7, and 9. do you have some good ideas besides the traditional candy and coloring books?
thanks!
also…all three are girls.
Susie answers:
I always give my daughter pajamas. She also usually gets chalk, bubbles, a jump rope, frisbee, new cup…somthing along those lines. She never gets candy in her basket.
Lisa asks…
Do you think sending my bf a basket full of junk food and candy for Easter is a cute idea?
I was thinking of sending my bf basically an Easter basket, but like a kiddish one of course lol. Hes in college and I thought it would be nice to send him a little something so he knows I’m thinking of him.
Susie answers:
If he is in collage he will more than likely be getting these things for himself so you’d be doing he a favor and saving him some money. And hide a few little love notes in the basket so he can find them as he goes along !
John asks…
What are some cute and appropriate Easter Basket Ideas for a 14 month old Boy?
My son will be 14 months old on Easter Day..and as i know he doesn’t need an Easter Basket as some would say I want to do a little something for him that day. I see all types of baskets, but most are filled with candy that he can’t have. So if anyone has any ideas that could help me out I would greatly apprecitate it…Thanks
Susie answers:
My son is 16 months. We purchased an empty plush basket that is of Elmo’s head with bunny ears. We then purchased a few things to go in the basket. We got three small Tonka cars that look like Wheel Pals but are smaller. They are the same size as cars that came with a few toy sets we had previously got him. The toy sets were for 18 months, but he plays with the m now. The cars are a soft plastic and large enough not to be a chocking hazzard. We also got two eggs that have M&Ms and Hershey Kisses in them. My sons likes shaking the eggs, and either my husband or I will eat the chocolate. We also bought a few other things we thought were cute, like a small stuffed duck. We purchased everything at Target.
How to make divinity? What is the right weather to make divinity in?
My maw maw always made divinity during christmas time. She passed away this year and no one in family has her recipie. I would like to try to make it but i always remember my maw maw saying that the weather has to be right to make divinity or it will come out heavy. Does anyone know?? A good recipie aswell!!
2 c White Sugar; Granulated
1/2 c Light Corn Syrup
1/2 c Water
1 pn Salt (1/8 tsp)
2 ea Egg Whites; Lg
1 ts Vanilla Extract
OPTIONALS:
1 c Nuts; Chopped, OR
1 c Cherries; Chopped, OR
1 c Orange Peels; Chopped, Etc.
Instructions
1. NOTE: TO PREWARM A CANDY THERMOMETER, SIMPLE PLACE IT AN A SMALL SAUCE PAN OF COLD WATER AND BRING IT TO A BOIL. LET IT SIMMER UNTIL YOU NEED THE THERMOMETER.
2. Pre warm the thermometer; separate the eggs allowing the whites to come to room temperature in a large bowl of an electric mixer. (Return the egg yolks to the refrigerator covering with plastic wrap or water for another recipe. ) Fill a glass with ice cubes and water. To make dropped divinities, you will need 2 cookie sheets, topped with greased wax paper. For squares, use a greased and wax paper-lined 8 X 8-inch pan. Measure the sugar, corn syrup, ice water and salt and dump into a heavy 2-quart saucepan with a tight fitting lid.
3. Dissolve the sugar, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon over low heat. Syrup will become clear, gritty sounds will cease, and the spoon will glide smoothly over the bottom of the pan. Increase the heat to medium and bring to a boil.
4. (OPTIONAL): Cover pan with a square of wax paper and lid, pushing down firmly. Steam for 2 to 3 minutes to dissolve the sugar crystals. (Listen to make sure the pot doesn’t boil over. To double-check, remove lid, leaving the wax paper in place. )
5. Wash down any crystals clinging to the sides with a brush dipped in hot water from the thermometer bath. Introduce the pre warmed thermometer. No need to stir.
6. Beat the egg whites until stiff but not dry. If your mixer is a heavy duty one, you can wait until the bubbles in the syrup become very large and airy before beating the egg whites. Otherwise, do it now when the thermometer registers 240 Degrees F. (115. 5 C. ).
7. Test the syrup when the thermometer registers 246 degrees F. (119 C. ). Continue testing until it reach the firm-ball stage, 246 to 260 degrees F. (119 to 126. 5 C. ). Syrup will be hard to scrape up in ice water. It will have to be forced into a ball, but once formed, it should hold its shape but give under pressure. Return the thermometer to the hot water bath to soak clean.
8. Dribble the syrup into the egg whites in a slow, steady stream, beating at slow speed. Tilt the syrup pan to get the last drop but do not scrape the pan. Once the syrup is completely incorporated, change to a flat whip if you have one.
9. Have patience and continue beating. The amount of time you spend mixing depends on the power of your mixer. If you have a heavy duty or commercial one, you can go to full speed and make the divinity in less than 5 minutes. With less powerful ones, it can take up to 20 minutes. The important thing is to beat at the highest speed of your mixer. Also if it is a hot and humid day, it will take longer also.
10. Test the divinity. The first and most important test occurs when you lift the beaters. If the candy falls back in ribbons that immediately merge back into the batter, it isn’t done. Eventually, a stationary column will form between the beaters and the bowl. Candy will lose its sheen/gloss and stop being sticky; a teaspoonful dropped onto wax paper will hold its shape, even a peak. If you machine is laboring and the candy is not quite there yet, you have two choices: Pour anyway and put into a frost free freezer to set up. . . . Or finish by hand.
11. Fold in the flavorings and nuts and/or other optional items using the mixer or if very thick, a wooden spoon.
12. Drop or spread the divinity either on wax paper-covered cookie sheets or the buttered pan. Dripping it by teaspoon is harder work for you but it ripens quicker and is ready to eat sooner. A neat trick is to put the candy into a pastry bag and pipe onto the wax paper. If you spread it in the pan, you will have to wait up to 24 hours before it is ready. But you maybe one of those that think it is better when it is 24 hours old. Score and cut into squares. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in a refrigerator. Makes 1 pound but looks like more.
Mary asks…
What is the best divinity candy recipe?
I have been trying to make divinity for 2 days now. It keeps turning out really runny and not fluffy. My mom can’t get it to turn out right either. I know about the weather and it’s influence, but I need the BEST recipe. Do you know any or any tips? THANKS!!!!!!!!
Susie answers:
I like Emeril’s recipe for divinity the best of all I’ve tried.
2 large egg whites
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (see note below)
1/2 cup chopped pecans
Beat the egg whites with an electric mixer until stiff. Line a baking sheet with parchment or waxed paper.
Put the sugar, corn syrup, and water in a medium-size heavy saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir to dissolve the sugar, bring to a boil and cook until the temperature reaches 260°F on a candy thermometer, or the hard-ball stage, when a bit of the mixture dropped into cold water holds its shape, 10 to 15 minutes.
Remove from the heat. Pour in a thin steady stream into the beaten egg whites and beat with an electric mixer on high for about 3 minutes, scraping down the sides of the bowl. Add the vanilla, and continue beating on high just until the candy starts to lose its gloss, 5 to 6 minutes.
When the beaters are lifted, the mixture should fall in a ribbon that mounds on itself. Add the pecans, stir to mix, and quickly drop the mixture by tablespoons onto the prepared sheet. If the mixture flattens out, beat again for 1 minute more. If the mixture is too thick to drop, beat in a few drops of hot water until the candy is a softer consistency.
Yield: about 24 pieces
NOTE: Sometimes I use peppermint extract instead of vanilla, and tint the divinity green or pink. I don’t always use nuts, either.
Other times I use almond extract instead of vanilla, add chopped marishino cherries, and tint the divinityt pink. The almond extract gives it a cherry flavor.
Betty asks…
How long should it take for divinity to set up?
I made chocolate mint divinity tonight and figured it would set up pretty quickly. It has been about 2 hours now and it is still not completly set up. How long should this take?
I made chocolate mint divinity and 2 days later it is still not set up. What did I do wrong and how long should it take for set up?
Susie answers:
Did you make the divinity ahead of time? You can make the divinity up to 3 days ahead of time. Leave it overnight… It’ll set by then.

How do nudes represent power and divinity in Greek Art?
I am doing an Art History paper and just need some ideas or main points that I can argue. My topic is Greek Art and Architecture, and I am talking about how nude figures in Greek Art represent power and divinity. Opinions are welcome as well.
Susie answers:
The greeks were very interested in humanism and the ideal figure so they portrayed them nude on order to show how perfect they were in every aspect. The romans made copies of numerous pieces of greek art because they too say the importance of the ideal. Also, the greeks developed a canon of proportions which showed what the perfect person would look like (they were almost obsessed with perfection)

Where is good quality distance mode diploma of theology or divinity that can be completed within 12 months?
I have about a year at hand to play with. I’m thinking about inviting a friend of mine to do a diploma of divinity or theology by distance education with me. I did a quick googling and there seem to be quite a lot of such courses around.
My question is: what school is well known for offering good quality distance mode diploma of theology or divinity that can be completed within 12 months?
Many thanks.
(Just to clarify, the religion I am talking about is Christianity).
Susie answers:
Just look on the inside cover of any matchbook in a bar or tavern near you. If you can’t draw the parrot you can get a divinity degree instead, in far less than 12 months as it happens.
Can I use Chocolate chips instead of Candy Coating?
I’m trying to make Cake balls`covered in White Chocolatecoating, but can I use white chocolate chips instead? I couldn’t find any candycoating.
Susie answers:
I’ve done this before and the chocolate didn’t harden very well. Perhaps you might have better luck. If you have a Meijers, Walmart or Kmart in your area you will find a Wilton section in each store. Wilton candy melts are very good.
Linda asks…
where can i find chocolate bark candy coating?
I went to the supermarket and I could not find this. It is to make a chocolate coated truffle. thank you.
Susie answers:
Buy milk chocolate(dove?) melt it,theres the coating.then make the truffle.
Betty asks…
Is it okay to use ordinary chocolate instead of candy coating?
Is it okay to use ordinary chocolate instead of candycoating? And what is the difference between the two?
Susie answers:
Yes you can! The difference is that ordinary chocolate is about 50% cocoa butter and is a natural fat of the cocoa bean, with good qualities. It needs to be tempered though. Cocoa butter is the stuff that makes chocolate hard when cooled. It’s what makes the chocolate so rich and creamy. Vegetable shortening is used to thin out thick chocolate, but it has bad fat qualities, and might not blend well with cocoa butter.
Candy coating is sometimes referred to as compound chocolate. The fat in this type can be different vegetable fats like palm oil, palm kernel oil, hydrogenated palm oil, etc. These fats have not so good qualities, and they replace the cocoa butter entirely. But it means you can simply melt it, and use it. Add vegetable shortening to thin, without problems (1-Tbsp shortening to 1-cup candy coating).
Nancy asks…
Could I substitute chocolate chips for candy coating?
I have a recipe for frosting that calls for candycoating. Could i just use chocolate chips? Would that work?

Daniel asks…
How do I make a brownie with a thick cream cheese layer on top covered in a thin chocolate (candy type)coating?
I am trying to replicate a recipe but I can’t figure out how to make a cheesecake filling that is very thick and can withstand being dipped (or coated) in the melted chocolate (the type of chocolate you dip pretzels in.) Any help would be great! Thanks
Susie answers:
They have that Chocolate Shell chocolate syrup at the store, which comes out like a chocolate syrup, but will harden after a minute or so, so you can just pour that over it, instead of dipping the brownies in a chocolate mixture.
For the cream cheese layer, you can add a couple tablespoons of flour or cornstarch, to thicken it up. I just found a pretty awesome pumpkin spice cheesecake recipe, which calls for a couple tbsp’s of bourbon, so you need to thicken it up again with the flour.
Also, don’t add any sour cream to it. Maybe just beat softened cream cheese with sugar and a little vanilla extract and put it on top of the brownies after they are cooked. Then put the cream cheese layer on top, and let it cool. Then put the chocolate shell sauce on top, after it’s cooled down.
I LOVE both Heath and Skor candybars. Milk chocolate and Butter Toffee…mmmm….totally my favorite candy. However, is there any darkchocolate and butter toffee candybars?
Any reccomendations other than Heath and Skor…because those are the only ones I know about…are welcomed too!?!?!
I want to find more of these types of candybars…know any?
Susie answers:
Hey there BIG Guy!
I’m not sure if you cook, but if you do, here is a link for a great recipe for you! It’s very easy and you can melt dark chocolate on the top in place of the other chocolate listed. These taste just like Toffee bars. Your gonna love them. Just a warning: These are addictive!
Good Luck!

Is it okay if I eat a whole hersheys dark chocolate bar if I’m trying to watch my weight?
As you guys know, Halloween is coming up and I seriously haven’t had a candy in the longest time. I’m never too strict on my eating habits. I don’t deprive myself of anything because I feel like if I’m craving something sweet , I should go ahead and have it but in moderation. Do you think eating a whole hersheys darkchocolate bar on Halloween wi really put a halt in my healthy lifestyle?
Susie answers:
Just space it out, have a little bit now, a little bit later, and a little bit after… Space it out because then you satisfy your cravings, your economic about eating the chocolate bar AND you don’t eat the whole bar as quickly .
Good luck on continuing your healthy life style!

My friends and i are going on an educational class trip next spring break. It has to be all paid off by Dec. One of my friends family is not very well off and is not going to be able to afford it even thought she has been working hard, babysitting, doing yard work, and selling candy at our school. In a last effort to try to help her, I was thinking of asking local car dealerships and stores such as Sams and Wal-mart, to donate. I’m not sure if they would be willing to donate to an individual, not a large group, and I probably would be inquiring by e-mail. I don’t seem to mean to be just be looking for easy cash, but she has been working hard, and it is an educational trip.
Susie answers:
As much as I am hoping the stores will donate, I’m just not sure if they would. However, it never hurts to try. What you’re doing is a good thing, so go ahead and send the email.

I want to make some extra money for college. (I am a teen) I am very crafty and what I make is glass magnets. They are hand painted, and i could sell them for a small amount. I already have an idea where to sell it if they will. Its a candy store and its not part of a chain of other stores, lots of kids go there all the time, and they are the group that would most likely buy my product. What should i do to get them to sell my product?

Ken asks…
Godiva or See’s Candies?
I’m really split between the two. So, which one do you like better and why?
Susie answers:
I like both it– depends on what you want–I like Godiva’s Truffles better but I like See’s Toffee and hard candies better
Lizzie asks…

Susie answers:
Mmm turkish delights… I like the small ones with pistachio and covered with powdered sugar.

Will tOuz forgive and go out with Azzurri Man if he comes up with wonderful football gifts?
the football gifts would be a chained down Wayne Rooney zombie and a AK47 machine gun (aiming at the Wayne Rooney zombie eating a raw piece of a bloody meat ) ….
and a box of lady godiva chocolate candies
All right Muffins baby …(tosses few lady godiva sampler candies into her wide open mouth )…..cool?
Chocolate as wedding favor? I’ve heard from alot of people that Godiva chocs are good for favors. But I don’t
think those people ever tried to buy them for 150 people! Godiva is expensive. Especially truffles. But of course they are so good
However, wanted to know what people thought. Not asking you to pick, just to give opinions or suggest
We are giving a donation & centerpieces will be bud vases with 2 or 3 roses per vase, one vase per couple
But want to have something chocolate too. Godiva makes 2pc ($4.75) & 4pc ($8.25) truffles
They also make 2pc ($3.75) & 4pc ($6.00)chocolate sets – not truffles
Was told that I could do a 4pc per couple to keep costs down, but wasn’t sure if that would look cheap, even though the least amount would be $3.00 spent per person!
Could do organza bags filled with m&m’s or hershey kisses. But I’d be spending a $1 for each bag & feel that I’d want to give one to each guest
Was told that scattered candy looks careless
What about 4pc russell stover/whitman samplers that are less than $1.50. Could wrap in pretty paper
Thoughts? Thanx
Also what about buying individual DOVE candy bars (like 80 cents each) and change labels to read LOVE?
I really like DOVE chocolate. They have candies on their website where you can pick colors and sayings, but they cost two much and I don’t really want to order chocolate.
And thoughts on chocolate cookies? But again – I’d have to pay for packaging.
Thoughts?
Susie answers:
If you do a search online for wedding favors, you will see they sell personalized chocolate bars. You dont have to do godiva at all. For 2 dollars each you can get chocolat ebars with you and your husband to bes name on it with your wedding colors. Dont stress out about the favors. No one cares anyways!!! Good luck!!
What’s the best way to get from the hotel Candy Cane Inn at Disneyland to Universal Studios?
There’s four of us a cab would be pretty expensive wouldn’t it?
Susie answers:
Mathman had it mostly right. You can take an ARTS shuttle to the train station at Anaheim Stadium.
Take a Metrolink to Union Station, then the Red Line Subway to Universal.
Have you thought of renting a car? It’s a lot faster.
Lizzie asks…
has anyone recently been to disneyland anaheim and stayed at either candy cane inn or tropicana inn?
If so how would you rate them?
Susie answers:
I have stayed in Anaheim plenty of times,The Candy Cane Inn gets quite good ratings, take a look at this web-site and compare the hotels in the area ,hope this helps in your decision

Michael asks…
Can somebody tell me if the candy cane inn hotel is nice or worth it?
Susie answers:
You can read what lots of other folks have said about it over at tripadvisor.com:
Currently ranks #1 in the area (out of 99 other hotels).
Can’t be bad!
Steven asks…
What is the best way to get to Anaheim from LAX by car?
What is the best way to get to Anaheim (CandyCaneInn on Harbor Blvd near Disneyland Resort) from LAX by car? How long does it take, and is the traffic really bad?
Susie answers:
105E to 605S to 91E to 5S. 40 minutes or so. If during rush hour then maybe an hour.
405 to the 10 is retarded and takes you out of the way
I work at Disney I know
And “2 hours” is ridiculous. You can get from Santa Barbara to Anaheim in 2 hours if traffic is good much less LA to Anaheim. And traffic is not always bad usually just from about 3 to 6 or 7 in most places in the evening
Cndycne inn is walking distance to the resort I know exactly where that is. Don’t waste your time waiting for a hotel shuttle when you’re ready to go back to the hotel. It’s a 5 minute walk on Harbor. Don’t pay 11 bucks for parking either when you can walk 5 minutes. That’s what I would do anyway.
Mandy asks…
Anaheim Hotels that Offer Continental Breakfasts?
Just wanting to know what hotels that are located near Disneyland offer Continental Breakfasts.

On the same website that you pulled that picture from – is a statement that Russell Stover candies were not part of the peanut recall.
Sandy asks…

it’s that very middle one with the nuts. i wanna know what type of nut it is. what it’s called.
i like the idea of making my own box. but i still don’t know what type of nut it was.
I don’t know what type! that’s why I’m asking!!!
I just know where it is placed within that type of box. I guess I”ll have to go buy a box to look.
You can build a box of your favorites at this site. Just follow the directions. They tell you what each candy is. There are 4 different nut cluster combinations.
Ken asks…
Big Survey: I give you a free box of Russell Stover Creams, which piece of candy do you go for first?
For me, I go for the orange creams first.
